A polarimeter to measure the vector and tensor polarization of the deuteron beam from the Triangle Universities Nuclear Laboratory Lambshift polarized ion source has been constructed and calibrated. Detectors monitor the /sup 3/He(d vector,p)/sup 4/He reference reaction in a small chamber immediately behind the primary scattering chamber. Accurate calibration measurements of the monitor analyzing powers have been obtained in the 4 to 17 MeV energy range by utilizing simultaneously measured /sup 4/He(d vector,d)/sup 4/He analyzing powers to determine beam polarizations. Cross sections, vector analyzing powers, and tensor analyzing powers for /sup 32/S(d vector,..cap alpha..)/sup 30/P at 16 MeV were measured for the transitions to the ground state and three lowest-lying T = 0 excited states in /sup 30/P. These include examples of J = L + 1, J = L, and J = L - 1 transfer. The ability of the tensor analyzing powers (in particular, T/sub 22/) to give additional spectroscopic information beyond that given by cross sections and vector analyzing powers was investigated within the framework of standard DWBA theory.
