Wear rate transitions in cast aluminum-silicon alloys reinforced with SiC particles

Journal Article · · Scripta Metallurgica et Materialia; (United States)
The objective of the study was to investigate the effect of SiC particles on the sliding wear resistance of Al-7 pct Si-0.35 pct Mg alloys and to identify wear mechanisms under different applied pressures. At low loads, the SiC-reinforced composites show better wear resistance than the unreinforced alloy. The presence of SiC particles also impedes the transition to severe wear observed in the unreinforced alloy. Between the two ends of the load spectrum, however, the addition of SiC particles does not affect the wear resistance of the alloy. Possible micromechanisms of wear are discussed. 12 refs.
