Ever-more-stringent clean-air regulations are forcing utilities that operate coal-fired generating capacity to turn toward innovative techniques--such as fixed- and fluidized-bed combustion, rotary-kiln, and proprietary chemical-process gasifiers--for removing gaseous and solid pollutants. As part of a joint venture at Southern California Edison's Cool Water plant, a chemical-process gasifier is being built as a major component of a 100-MW integrated gasification/combined-cycle unit. The scheme--unique to the utility industry--will gasify about 1,000 tons/day of bituminous coal.
