This paper studies opportunities for significant system improvements in the integrated coal gasification, combined-cycle power plant (IGCC). The general arrangement of the IGCC is schematized. Several parameters were considered in formulating IGCC plant trends: influence of coal gasification efficiency (it results in more than proportionate improvement in cost of power), gas turbine firing temperature and pressure ratio (increase has 5% improvement), steam system operating pressures and temperatures, supplemental HRS firing, primary superheating in the SGB, and alternative integrated plant configurations. The overall electricity cost is then calculated. The evolution of higher temperature gas turbine design is a key variable in proved overall system performance.
