Commercial applications of low-Btu coal gasification to combined cycle electric generation plants using the KILnGAS process

Conference · · Energy Technol. (Wash., D.C.); (United States)
OSTI ID:5575472
The KILnGAS system evolved from Allis-Chalmers rotating, kiln experience, has a rotating, pressurized gasifier as its central element. The coal enters the kiln and passes through four process zones--drying, preheating, devolatilization, and gasification. Cyclones, quenchers, and venturi scrubbers clean the fuel gas. KILnGAS factors include: ability to convert large amounts of coal without pre-treatment, tumbling bed can process caking coals, high energy conversion rates, operating flexibility, and economics. Milestones in the technology are reviewed. Allis Chalmer's demonstration plant at the Wood River Generating station of Illinois Power is discussed. KILnGAS is then compared with conventional coal purification processes, and has several specified advantages, plus lower costs.
