In order to obtain the certain specific factors regarding the rate of atmospheric corrosion of steel in various regions of the Estonian SSR, the authors measured specimens of St3 steel. The tests lasted from 3 months to 2 years, during which the specimens were gradually removed. The corrosion rate was measured by weighing. Each cited result is the mean of five measurements. In the industrial regions of the Estonian SSR there is open-cut shale extraction, shale processing, and shale chemistry, and also large shale-fired thermal power stations. The specimens were set up in the regions of these industries in order to record their influence on the atmospheric corrosion metal. An analysis of the chemical composition of the dust is given.
