A three level assessment of the residual strength of corroded line pipe
- Univ. of Waterloo, Ontario (Canada). Dept. of Mechanical Engineering
The ANSI/ASME B31G criterion has served as a valuable tool in assessing tile residual strength of corroded line pipe. However, high resolution inspection suggests the need for a more detailed and less conservative assessment procedure to take advantage of the improved measurement of the corrosion geometry while retaining the simplicity of the application of B31G. Predicting the residual strength of corroded pipe can be difficult, in view of the many variables affecting failure and the uncertainties in data that may be available for older pipe. In this paper, a multilevel assessment procedure is proposed, which would provide reduced conservatism for increased sophistication of the analysis and knowledge of the geometric, material and loading conditions.
