Multiconfiguration Dirac-Fock study of the 5 d 6 p sup 3 F sub 4 sup degree lifetime in singly ionized lanthanum

The lifetime of the 5{ital d}6{ital p} {sup 3}{ital F}{degree}{sub 4} level of singly ionized lanthanum has been studied using the extended average level'' version of the multiconfiguration Dirac-Fock method. In order to account for intravalence correlation, the relativistic counterparts of the 5{ital d}6{ital p}, 4{ital f}6{ital s}, and 4{ital f}5{ital d} configurations have been used to describe the upper state, whereas those corresponding to the 5{ital d}{sup 2}, 5{ital d}6{ital s}, 4{ital f}6{ital p}, and 4{ital f}{sup 2} configurations are allowed to mix in forming the lower states. The valence-core-electron correlation is included in the computation in an approximate way by means of the core-polarization model. The resulting lifetime of the 5{ital d}6{ital p} {sup 3}{ital F}{degree}{sub 4} level of La is 4.6 ns and is shorter than the value (6.0{plus minus}1.0 ns) measured in a beam-foil experiment.
