Mutual benefits are driving the growth of demand-side management (DSM): customers profit from efficiency improvements and enhanced service, utilities make better use of existing resources, and society gains from positive environmental impacts. These conference papers present results of DSM programs throughout the country and offer discussions on emerging issues. Many states and utilities have seen enormous growth in DSM since the 4th National DSM Conference, held in May 1989. Spurred by financial incentives, environmental concerns, and customer service needs, DSM takes on a new, prominent role in meeting the industry's resource requirements. The objectives of this conference were to provide an interactive forum to discuss DSM experiences from a variety of perspectives and to explore emerging issues that will shape the DSM discipline; and to present real-world examples of what has and has not worked, guiding future directions for planning, implementing, and evaluating DSM programs. Individual papers have been cataloged separately.
