Silicabased phosphonic sorbents have a high affinity for titanium subgroup of elements and scandium. A sorbent with grafted phenylphosphonic acid groups extracts more than 90% of these elements in up to 4 M HCl. Under optimal conditions, the distribution coefficients are n x 10/sup 4/ cm/sup 3//g. Methods were developed for concentrating Ti and Th from dilute solutions and also for separating Ti and Th from 10/sup 3/-fold amounts of Fe(III).
