Efficiency enhancement in an electron cyclotron autoresonance maser (CARM) amplifier through magnetic field tapering is investigated using computer simulations. Depending on the initial frequency mismatch, tapering the magnetic field with either a negative or positive gradient can enhance the efficiency over that of the resonantly tuned CARM. Tapering, however, has little effect in further increasing the efficiency of the optimally detuned device. Tapering also becomes ineffective when force bunching plays a significant role in the bunching process. A physical explanation for these findings is presented.
