Title: Filtering coal liquids: influence of particle sedimentation on filtration

At the National Coal Board, (England) methods of coal liquefaction aimed at the production of transport fuels and feedstocks for the chemical industry are currently under development. In one of the processes, coal is dissolved in a high boiling aromatic solvent to produce a digest from which solids, consisting of undissolved coal fragments and mineral matter, are removed by filtration. The resultant coal extract solution is then hydrocracked to premium liquid products and a fraction suitable for recycling as process solvent. For the process to be economically attractive, it is important to achieve a high rate of filtration. In the reported experiments, a study was made to investigate the effects of particle segregation by size and type upon filtration, in order to achieve the maximum filtration rate. Data are presented which show that higher filtration rates were obtained with coal digest when the filter was used in a media that prevented sedimentation of the entrained solids. 12 refs.
