Economic evaluation of improvements in the conventional method of producing blast-furnace coke

Long-term scientific forecasts of developments in the coking industry predetermine the conditions of coke production and the tasks the industry must undertake. For the next 10 to 15 years, the determining factors will be the quantity and quality requirements of blast-furnace coke and the demand for coke for other purposes. For the foreseeable future, coke production will continue to depend on the conventional oven process, but there are clear indications that blast-furnace coke specifications must be significantly tightened. The plants producing blast-furnace coke must reequip themselves to new technical standards. Otherwise it will be impossible even to maintain the present quality level, to say nothing of improving the size analysis or mechanical strength of the coke they make. The other vital factor which must restrain developments in the coking industry is the ceiling on capital available for investment. The pressing problems to which priority attention must be given are: (1) the need to make the industry much more cost effective; (2) labor resources; and (3) the environmental pollution problem.
