Manifestation of the conformational composition of dialkylphenylphosphines in the infrared, Raman and x-ray fluorescence spectra

The IR, Raman, and PK/sub ..beta../ fluorescence spectra of dialkylphenylphosphines give characteristic manifestations of p-..pi.. conjugation which becomes weaker in the order Me > Et > i-Pr > t-Bu as a result of change in the conformational composition of the compounds. From the intensities of the IR bands of the stretching vibrations of the benzene ring of the dialkylphenylphosphines the value of sigma/sub R//sup u/ for the rotamer (B) with geometry favorable for the existence of p-..pi.. conjugation was estimated. The ..pi..-donor power of the PAlk/sub 2/ group in this conformer is one-quarter of that of the NMe/sub 2/ group.
