Mechanism of naphthalene fraction purification with ozone

Journal Article · · Coke Chem. USSR (Engl. Transl.); (United States)
OSTI ID:5570700

The liquid-phase ozone oxidation technique removes a very high proportion of indene and indole from naphthalene fraction. The technique essentially consists in treating the naphthalene fraction with ozonized air at 130 to 140/sup 0/C and then distilling the oxidized fraction. In the high-temperature liquid-phase ozonolysis of indene and indole in naphthalene fraction, the ozone mainly attacks the NH-group in the indole and the double bonds in indole and indene. The atomic oxygen released by ozone breakdown is mainly consumed in oxidizing naphthalene, but the product losses when using ozonized air remain below 0.5%.
