To develop hydrocarbon fields located in deep waters, several alternatives can be contemplated. Among these alternatives, some of them use surface wellheads while others use subsea wells; some alternatives are using bottom founded structures, while others use floating structures or a combination of both. The purpose of this paper is to try to assess when a compliant tower will be the most appropriate solution to consider. To make this assessment, the different types of compliant towers are recalled, as well as the different types of floating structures. Then some criteria are introduced to compare the different alternatives and to determine when a compliant tower is the most appropriate solution.
