The Lorena cookstove: solution of the firewood crisis
The introduction of efficient wood-burning stoves for domestic use in the arid Sahel region of Africa could have a significant impact on the rural energy crisis. Because the consumption of firewood has exceeded the supply, the depletion is taking place at about twice the rate of new growth. In some areas, villagers have been forced to do without fuel, thus contributing to the spread of waterborne diseases. Although the Lorena cook stove is inexpensive and very efficient, cost and cultural factors may be drawbacks in this economy. It is suggested that cookstove extension should be integrated with other intensive programs designed to increase wood supply, decrease wood consumption and meet basic human needs. (JMT)
