The lower Duperow D cycle is productive in Pierre Creek, North Rough Rider, and Bull Moose fields on the northern plunge of the Billings anticline in southern McKenzie County, North Dakota. Petrographic examination of drill cuttings from wells in these fields indicates that the productive lithofacies is a sucrosic dolomite. This same lithofacies is productive in several fields to the south along the Billings anticline, including Big Stick, TR, and Four Eyes. Duperow D cycle cores from these fields indicate that the productive lithofacies is predominantly a stromatoporoid boundstone. In North Rough Rider and Bull Moose fields, a close relationship exists between Duperow production and present-day structure. The best oil production in these fields is associated with closed structures along the crest of anticlines. However, Duperow production in Pierre Creek Field is along the northwest flank of a structural closure, suggesting a local stratigraphic component. Estimated ultimate reserves for the best Duperow D cycle wells exceed 400,000 bbl of oil. Drilling depths range from 11,000 to 11,500 ft, and completed well costs are normally less than $900,000. This play is economic even with depressed oil prices.
