This study explored the blending of residual fuels with railroad diesel fuel as a potential cost saving method. A blend guideline was developed for fuel properties based on the known or estimated fuel tolerance limits of locomotive engines. Such blends would also be usable in marine and stationary applications of medium-speed diesel engines. Representative No. 6 fuel oils were obtained and blended to the guideline limit. Blends containing 6 to 13 volume percent No. 6 fuel oil were prepared and analyzed. The properties appeared to be acceptable, although certain problem areas were identified and long term effects on the engines are unknown.
