Total drilling of wells related to the oil and gas industry decreased in all categories in 1970. The decrease was due to diversion of funds to other areas involving large investments. Sixty-four counties were explored for new reservoirs, and 40 had successful completions, making a statewide success ratio for exploratory wells of 22%. Caddo County had the most exploratory tests, of which 5 were discoveries. Discoveries were in sandstone reservoirs. The 22 giant oil fields of Oklahoma are listed. These giants produced approx. 45% of the yearly total of oil and accounted for about the same percent of the estimated ultimate yield and remaining reserves. This production came from 40% of the total number of producing wells in the state. Natural-gas reserves decreased from 17,593 trillion cu ft in 1969 to 16,954 trillion cu ft in 1970, owing to increased production in spite of slight increases in discoveries, extensions, and revisions. Total liquid- hydrocarbon reserves decreases from 1,856 billion bbl in 1969 to 1,710 billion bbl in 1970. Crude oil and natural- gas liquids shared in the decline.
