The D/sub 2/F radical has been studied by a combination of neutralized ion beam and charge stripping techniques. Neutrals formed by D/sub 2/SF/sup +//Na charge exchange are observed in metastable and dissociative states. The lifetime of metastable D/sub 2/F is greater than 0.4 ..mu..s. Metastability is not observed for HDF or H/sub 2/F. The dissociative state of D/sub 2/F releases about 1.9 eV of kinetic energy in its fragmentation products (DF + D). The vertical electron affinity of H/sub 2/F/sup +/ is calculated to be 6.6 +- 0.2 eV. The possibility of observing an emission continuum from electronically excited H/sub 2/F formed by H/sub 2/F/sup +//K charge exchange is suggested. Similarities in the mass spectra of D/sub 2/F and the isoelectronic D/sub 3/O radical are indicated.
