Measurement by orifice
A group of 18 technical papers describes the principles of orifice meters, their design, operation, and maintenance, together with auxiliary equipment and fittings. Demonstrations are utilized wherein the use of the equipment is illustrated. Of particular interest are problems in offshore gas measurement. It is noted that the orifice meter is basically a velocity-measuring device, based on the principle of conservation of energy. The orifice meter must be considered as made up of several distinct parts. There is the special kind of restriction or the orifice plate (primary cevice) and its associated piping, the differential pressure transducer to measure the pressure changes or differences (secondary device), and the interconnecting piping or lead lines. The secondary element is the gage for recording the changing pressure conditions around the restriction. The basic coefficient takes into account all of the numerical constants, and the size of the orifice. It is essential that all orifice-meter installations be made in such a manner that the shape of the flow stream remains the same.
