Simulation of bunches coalescing in the main ring, in the presence of a high-frequency, wide-band resonator

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:5568938
During the first part of the coalescing process, bunches are stretched until they fill a 1 kV 53 MHz bucket. It is considered likely that local instabilities developed in the bunch during manipulation. A computer calculation was done to give an approximate picture of the bunch distortions, and outputs are presented. The high frequency impedance seen by the beam was simulated by a Q = 1 resonator at 2000 MHz. Some simulations have also been done at the bunch rotation part of coalescing, and no catastrophic degradation was found. The bunch stretching part of the coalescing process is found to be sensitive to machine impedance. Bunch rotation is found to be more tolerant. (LEW)
