Recent studies have suggested that more jobs would result from conservation and solar energy than from increased reliance on conventional fuels. One study estimates that almost three million jobs could result under a solar scenario similar to President Carter's announced goal of relying on solar power for 20% of the nation's energy by the end of the century. There is considerable controversy over the job potential, but advocates hope that such studies will help persuade the major labor unions to endorse solar power as the alternative to conventional energy sources. That support is considered crucial to the cause. Details on the number of jobs, the industrial view, and the push needed from the labor unions are discussed. (MCW)
