Eastern Europe will depend on imports

Natural gas production in E. Europe is increasing rapidly, but so is demand. Therefore, imports are fast becoming the key factor in whether this decade's domestic demand in Russia and its satellites will be met satisfactorily. U.S.S.R. leads in production, demand, reserves, imports, and exports. However, Hungary leads in growth with 145% production increase (since 1965), and has almost doubled its reserves. Czechoslovakia is the only country with a planned natural gas production decrease. Romania and Russia are E. Europe's sole natural gas exporters. A country-by-country preview of gas in the 1970's for E. Europe is given and the information is tabulated to show reserves, exports, imports, and demand.
