An oil burner of the high pressure type having a number of burner nozzles mounted in a burner housing each nozzle adapted to eject a concentrated high pressure jet of oil which is decomposed into a body of separate oil drops each body having a central axis extending axially through the center of the nozzles means for having combustion air flow through the burner housing past the burner nozzles. The oil burner is characterized by: a flame cup having a larger cross sectional area than the burner housing and a forwardly located outlet opening having a smaller cross sectional area than the housing cross sectional area, the flame cup having a throat directly connected to the burner housing and extending coaxially therewith, the oil drop bodies and the combustion air being mixed to an intimate fuel-air mixture within the flame cup; a turbulator having a center hole for passage therethrough of the oil drop bodies and tubulator wings arranged around the center hole for imparting an axial screw movement to the passing combustion air, the turbulator being located between the burner nozzles and the outlet opening so that the turbulator hole is substantially tangential to the periphery of the oil drop bodies; and the burner nozzles being arranged symmetrically around the longitudinal axis of the burner housing and mounted at an angle relative to one another to cause the central axis of the oil bodies to cross each other substantially along the longitudinal axis at a point between the turbulator and the outlet of the flame cup.
