A stoker is described for use within a wall structure defining a combustion chamber, consisting of: a grate for supporting burning fuel and having an outer periphery disposed in spaced relation to the wall structure; and tuyere defining means disposed around and secured to the wall structure generally above the grate; the tuyere defining means comprising a plurality of distinct tiered modules, each having a substantially smooth and downwardly converging face with apertures therein, the combined faces together forming a downwardly converging surface for containing and inwardly directing the fuel and having means receptive of pressurized air communicating with the apertures for directing the air into the combustion chamber; and the tuyere defining means and the grate overlapping to define a baffle about the outer periphery of the grate for confining the fuel within the outer periphery of the grate.
