Three energy-efficient solar homes in metropolitan Washington, D.C., Boston, and Philadelphia/Camden will provide marketing and technical data for Solar Thermal Systems, a division of Exxon Enterprises Inc. Each of the homes features a distinctive active solar energy system in addition to passive energy-saving construction and building materials. A total view was taken to design housing that will minimize fossil fuel consumption. The Foxboro, Mass. house has a unique heat pump and Ice Maker system with an electronic brain which operates to either melt or freeze ice as needed. The Washington Township, N.J. house features smaller window areas and fewer interior walls as well as a combination heat pump/solar system. A well-insulated tank stores hot water for heating and hot water needs. The Washington, D.C. house has a traditional design with triple-glazed windows, a heat recovery and redistribution system, and other passive energy-saving measures in conjunction with a combination heat pump/solar collector system.
