How TVA leads in conservation

The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) is a national leader in energy conservation with its extensive programs for consumers in all sectors. TVA will also be the national showcase for solar technology demonstration. The home audit and insulation program, in which TVA offers no-interest loans for insulation and weatherization improvements, is its largest conservation program. Consumers repay the loans in equal installments on their utility bills for a period up to seven years. TVA estimates that 190 million kWh/y have already been saved by the above measures. Qualifying consumers can also have their heat pumps financed. A program for insulating one warm room in older houses could develop a marketable module. TVA is promoting energy-efficient building standards and conducting workshops for commercial and industrial consumers, a program which could conserve 5.6 billion kWh/y by the late 1980s. Other efforts include remote-control load management, solar water heating, and wood-burning heaters. (DCK)
