The face-to-face complexes M{sub 2}(CO){sub 2}Cl{sub 2}(mu-L{sub 2}){sub 2} (M = Ir or Rh, L{sub 2} = dppm or dmpm) are versatile synthetic precursors and have been used to prepare a diverse range of complexes. The preparation of new Rh face-to-face complexes by the displacement of SO{sub 2} from Rh{sub 2}(mu-SO{sub 2})Cl{sub 2}(mu-dppm){sub 2} by PMe{sub 3} and NO{sup +} is described herein. These materials are desired starting materials for the preparation of CO-free analogs of the oxo, imido, and amido complexes prepared from M{sub 2}(CO){sub 2}Cl{sub 2}(mu-L{sub 2}){sub 2}. The crystal data and bond lengths for the complexes were determined and are reported. 15 refs., 1 fig., 3 tabs.
