The Thirteenth International Symposium on the Scientific Basis for Nuclear Waste Management was held in Boston, Massachusetts, on November 27--30 as part of the 1989 Fall Meeting of the Materials Research Society. The symposium continues to be of the premier international forum for presentation of research findings in the field of high level waste disposal and increasingly is covering topics related to low and intermediate level waste handling and disposal. This year we decided to place special emphasis on cementitious materials to encourage participation from research workers in the area of low and intermediate level waste. This volume contains 89 papers. Individual papers and indexed separately on the energy data base.
