Image processing by computer

Journal Article · · Sci. Am.; (United States)
The basic principles of digital image processing are reviewed. Several of the more important techniques currently employed for the enhancement and the restoration of digitized images are described. Emphasis is placed on the formulation of more effective algorithms for the deblurring of photographs that are out of focus or streaked by camera motion. When the information in an image is expressed in digital form, it can be manipulated mathematically rather than optically. By such methods a blurred photograph can sometime be restored to clarity. 5 references, 14 figures.
