In a conventional CO/sub 2/ laser system with low-speed longitudinal flow of the gas mixture along the discharge column a significant axial gain gradient has been found. Factors influencing the decrease of gain in the direction of the gas flow have been studied using a specially constructed cell. The rate of decrease can be strongly reduced by the addition of small amounts of xenon resulting in enhanced gain and power output.
