The Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) was mandated by Superfund legislation to create two national registries: (1) a registry of persons exposed to hazardous substances (The National Exposure Registry), and (2) a registry of persons with serious illness(es) or diseases (The National Disease Registry). The policies and procedures for The National Exposure Registry have been established and published. The purpose of the registry is to aid in assessing long-term health consequences of exposure to Superfund-related hazardous substance. The first goal (of five) given to meet that purpose is to facilitate epidemiological or health studies. How national data files are now being created to meet that goal will be discussed. The availability of these data files for research will also be discussed.
