A new underwater trenching machine (developed by P. de la Motte, West Germany) can bury and backfill subsea pipelines in a single operation. Controlled through an umbilical from a support vessel, the self-propelled UWAG I uses a combination of hydraulic boom-mounted chain cutters, high-pressure water-air jets, and suction pumps to cut a ditch 1.3-5.5 ft wide and 3.2-9.8 ft deep. The trencher can bury pipelines up to 24 in. in diameter at speeds of 300 ft/hr.
