The Port Nickel Plant, which is known for pioneering new hydrometallurgical technology for nickel laterites and nickel-cobalt-copper mattes, was converted in 1986 to process a variety of spent hydrotreating catalysts. The spent catalysts are completely reclaimed to recover products of vanadium pentoxide, molybdenum trisulfide, alumina trihydrate and a nickel-cobalt concentrate. The current plant process and potential for diversification into processing other metals-bearing wastes are discussed in the paper.
