Cyclotron resonance in a noneutral plasma

Journal Article · · Phys. Rev. Lett.; (United States)

Single-component plasmas are found to exhibit a reversal in the roles of cyclotron and upper hybrid resonances familiar in neutral plasmas. There is a global resonance at the cyclotron frequency ..omega.. = ..cap omega..equivalentqB/mc and a local field cancellation at layers where ..omega.. = ..cap omega../sub 1/ = (..cap omega../sup 2/-..omega../sub p//sup 2/)/sup 1/2/ ..omega../sub p/ being the local plasma frequency. Thermal effects limit the amplitude of the global resonance and produce energy absorption at the ..omega.. = ..cap omega../sub 1/ layers.
