A method for recovering hydrocarbons from a subterranean hydrocarbon-containing formation by counterflow in situ combustion consists of the following steps: (1) forming a fracture through the formation from an injection well to a remote production well; (2) coating the surface of the fracture with sealing material; (3) establishing a combustion zone in a portion of the formation contiguous to the production well; (4) injecting an oxidant downward through the injection well, through the coated fracture and to the combustion zone and moving the zone through the formation; and (5) lowering the pressure within the production well and producing fluids entering the production well.
