Direct photodissociation is proposed as an important destruction mechanism for the CH bonds in large interstellar molecules exposed to UV radiation. The implications for the unidentified infrared emission bands (UIR) are examined assuming that polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are the carriers of the bands. Direct photodissociation can account for extensive dehydrogenation of PAHs which was inferred from the analysis of UIR spectra. 35 refs.
