Energy consumption in purge distillation columns

Distillation columns are often used to purge undesirable components from a reactor recycle system. A portion of the recycle stream is fed to the purge column. There is an optimum column feed rate, which minimizes energy consumption in the distillation column. In this paper, two cases are considered. In the first, the component to be purged is heavier (less volatile) than the main component in the recycle stream. The purge stream is the bottom product from the distillation column. In the second system, the purge stream is the overhead distillate product from the column since the purged component is lighter (more volatile) than the main component in the recycle.
