A method is described of preventing voltage rehearsals in an anode-limited, non-aqueous electrochemical cell comprising an active metal anode, an inert cathode collector and an electrolyte comprising a solute dissolved in a compatible non-aqueous solvent depolarizer selected from the group consisting of sulfur dioxide, oxyhalides, and thiohalides, comprising the step of placing a ceramic material between the anode and the cathode providing a physical separator therebetween, wherein the ceramic material consists primarily of alumina (Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/) and silica (siO/sub 2/).
