The press is told that media treatment of nuclear energy has been superficial and often irresponsible. The press is responsible for much of the public's apprehension, and should work in cooperation with the industry to present objective facts of nuclear energy economics and safety. The Reagan administration intends to reverse the impact of the Carter policies on the nuclear option by supporting commercial reprocessing and shifting the focus from conservation and renewable energy sources back to nuclear energy. New management structure and responsibilities will address the US decline as a world leader in nuclear energy and realign the country with its traditional trading partners. This will reverse the erosion of the Non-Proliferation Treaty and the authority of the International Energy Agency. Current economic problems could delay utility plant expansion without some steps toward deregulation. (DCK)
