Pulsed laser photothermal spectroscopy of liquids and solids: Progress report for period September 30, 1986-November 30, 1987

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:5553282
A new apparatus has been created that measures the lifetimes of radiationless decay processes in liquids on time scales dropping down to a few nanoseconds. The particular novelty of the instrument lies in its capability of accurately resolving the shape of pulsed laser generated photoacoustic signals in liquids thus permitting a detailed comparison with recently developed theoretical models for their shape. The use of poly(vinylidene difluoride) piezoelectric detectors in these experiments has been compared with photothermal beam deflection. The measurements have also been extended to the millisecond time scale by the inclusion of photothermal lens detection. A new study of luminescenie in rare earth salts with a variety of inorganic dopants has also been carried out. 9 refs., 6 figs.
