Ultrasonic wave attenuation measurements made on aluminum single crystals and other materials suggest that such techniques can be used to measure the permanent strain and residual stresses induced by inhomogenous plastic deformation. This paper describes the basis of this technique and the results of an experimental program to determine the material constants needed for its use. The results show that attenuation can be used as an indication of plastic strain and of the effectiveness of stress relieving operations. The method also appears to have value in measuring the stress existing in annealed materials, but its use for residual stress measurement needs further development.
