An experimental and theoretical program was completed that thoroughly characterizes the e-beam sustained-discharge HgBr laser. The preliminary design of a 100-Hz, 2-J HgBr laser was performed. From measurements of HgBr fluorescence efficiency as a function of E/N the primary laser excitation process has been identified as the collisional excitation of HgBr/sub 2/ by electrons. A self-consistent set of excitation cross sections is derived from the experiment. The formation efficiency of HgBr(B) in a discharge is 6%.
