Preliminary design of the NRL modified betatron

Journal Article · · IEEE Trans. Nucl. Sci.; (United States)

The principal subsystems of the NRL Modified Betatron Accelerator have been designed. These subsystems include the air-core magnets, the mechanical structure, the vacuum system, the injector accelerator, and the pulse power capacitor banks. The betatron concept uses an applied toroidal magnetic field to improve the stability and confinement of a multikiloamp electron beam. Trapping of an injected beam will result from varying the B /SUB z/ by a few Gauss during the first poloidal bounce period. Externally driven coils will compensate the diffusion of the self magnetic field to maintain equilibrium.
