Characterizing neutron energy fluence spectra in terms of an equivalent monoenergetic neutron fluence for radiation-hardness testing of electronics

Journal Article · · Annu. Book ASTM Stand.; (United States)
OSTI ID:5550003
The practice covers procedures for characterizing a neutron fluence from a source in terms of an equivalent monoenergetic fluence. The source is one having a broad neutron-energy spectrum, and the relevant equivalence is in terms of a specified effect on certain physical properties of materials upon which the source spectrum is incident. In radiation-hardness testing of electronic semiconductor devices, the specific material of interest is silicon and the neutron sources generally are Godiva- and Triga-type reactors. The technique involved relies on: (1) a detailed determination of the energy spectrum of the neutron source; (2) a knowledge of the degradation (damage) effects of neutrons as a function of energy on specific material properties; and (3) the use of neutron-fluence monitor for spectrum normalization under repeatable irradiation conditions.
