Spin excitations observed in inelastic scattering polarization transfer experiments with 319 MeV protons

Conference · · AIP Conf. Proc.; (United States)
OSTI ID:5549380
The polarization of the outgoing protons has been measured for small angle inelastic scattering from /sup 90/Zr and /sup 51/V with a 319 MeV incident polarized proton beam. The measured spin-flip cross section is a direct measure of the spin excitations in the nucleus. The results for /sup 90/Zr show a large spin-flip cross section is a direct measure of spin excitations in the nucleus. The results for /sup 90/Zr show a large spin-flip cross section which is approximately evenly distributed between 8 and 25 MeV excitation; the Ml region is not prominent. Preliminary data for /sup 51/V also reveal large continuum spin excitations, as well as a clear peak in the Ml region. The data are discussed in relation to the search for missing spin excitation strength in the delta region and to electron scattering results.
