Automatic dynamic focusing for computed tomography
This patent describes a system for dynamically scanning an object under study using penetrating radiation. It comprises: means for directing a penetrating radiation source to illuminate a given area which is remote from the radiation source, detector means for collecting penetrating radiation falling on a surface in the given area, means for producing a shadow on the surface. The shadow-producing means being interposed between the penetrating radiation source and the surface. The shadow increasing or decreasing as a function of the angle of incidence of the penetrating radiation illuminating the surface, means for changing the distance between the penetrating radiation source and the detector means, and means responsive to a change in the distance between the penetrating radiation source and the detector means for concurrently with the change in distance, orienting the detector means for collecting penetrating radiation in order to adjust the angle of incidence to reduce the shadow to substantially a minimum amount.
