Union Carbide will build a 300-million lbs/year butanol plant at a yet-to-be-decided site on the US Gulf Coast by 1998. The proposed plant will be identical to the company`s 300-million lbs/year unit at Taft, LA that will be completed by the end of this year. Both plants will use oxo process technology and boost Carbide`s total butanol capacity to 1.2 billion lbs/year, which includes 560 million lbs/year at Texas City, TX. {open_quotes}This investment underscores our strategic commitment to oxo alcohols,{close_quotes} says James F. Flynn, Carbide`s v.p. and general manager/solvents and intermediates. {open_quotes}Continued investment in the butanol business supports our customers` needs and our own internal requirements.{close_quotes} The need for a new unit is dictated by growth rates in derivative products, driven principally by worldwide demand for butyl acrylate and butyl acetate, {close_quotes}he says.
